The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt musical comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. The show follows six quirky middle school students competing in a county spelling bee. Each contestant is exceptionally talented but also dealing with personal insecurities, family pressures, loneliness, and the awkwardness of growing up. As the competition progresses, the audience learns about their lives, dreams, and struggles through comedic scenes and musical numbers. The bee is overseen by the eccentric former champion Rona Lisa Peretti, the increasingly frustrated vice principal Douglas Panch, and Mitch Mahoney, a former convict serving as the competition’s comfort counselor. As students are eliminated one by one, they must come to terms with winning, losing, and discovering who they are beyond the competition.
